How Will the Lunar Eclipse Affect You?

This afternoon, there will be a lunar eclipse occurring. This Full Moon eclipse will take place at 4:13 pm EDT, and it will fall at 24 degrees and 23 minutes of Tropical Gemini (24 Gemini 23).

An eclipse is considered to be a big deal, bringing all manner of momentous changes in its wake. Much has been written and speculated about how these celestial events portend unfortunate things like war and natural disasters, but this is not the only type of outcome that an eclipse can indicate. In fact, eclipses can help us to anticipate major changes that are forthcoming in our own individual lives, if we pay attention to where the eclipses fall in our natal charts.

So, what does the location of the eclipse in a natal chart tell us about what is going to happen in a person’s life? The house position or house axis where an eclipse occurs shows us what area of life is going to be experiencing change.

To narrow down the possibilities of exactly what can be expected, it is also important to observe what planets in the natal chart are being aspected by the eclipse point(s); planets that are being conjuncted by the eclipse are especially important. For these purposes, it is suggested that you use an orb of no more than five degrees.

Think about what houses are being ruled by planets being aspected by the eclipse in order to figure out what event is likely to occur. If the eclipse is aspecting a planet ruling the 10th house, there may be career or status changes forthcoming in a person’s life.

Generally, a lunar eclipse is in effect for six months, while a solar eclipse is in effect for a year, so expect the event(s) to occur within those time frames. Solar eclipses tend to represent beginnings, while lunar eclipses tend to show matters being brought to a head. Also, keep in mind that, when there is a major event about to take place in a person’s life, there often will be more than one relevant and descriptive eclipse occurring within a year’s time.

So that you can get a better sense of how to interpret an eclipse’s likely effects in your life, I am going to provide some examples using the charts of famous people.

The breakout year for Oprah Winfrey (born Jan. 29, 1954 at 4:25 am CST in Kosciusko, MS) was 1986. Her locally-televised talk show was expanded to an hour-long broadcast, and the show went national on September 8. Earlier that year, she had a solar eclipse tightly conjunct her 4th house cusp, opposite her 10th house cusp. This indicates career, status, and private life changes. The 4th house ruler is in the 11th house of large groups and hopes and dreams being fulfilled, while the 10th house ruler is in the 2nd house of finances, conjunct the Sun.

Some months after this eclipse, Winfrey had another eclipse, this time a lunar eclipse. It fell across her 4th house/10th house axis, conjuncting her Ascendant lord Saturn in the 10th house (showing the culmination of career success), and squaring her 10th lord Venus in the 2nd house. Both of these eclipses presaged Oprah’s career and financial gains during that year.

In November 2008, Barack Obama (born Aug. 4, 1961 at 7:24 pm [-10:00 GMT] in Honolulu, HI) was elected President of the United States. He had several eclipses earlier that year that indicated major personal and professional changes. First, a solar eclipse occurred on his Ascendant (whose co-lord Saturn is in the 12th house, and whose co-lord Uranus is in the 7th house). This eclipse shows major personal changes involving both extreme public outreach (7th house) and surprising career achievement (as the 7th house is the 10th house from the 10th), and it also foreshadows a certain amount of personal isolation (since Saturn is in the 12th house).

Next, Obama had a lunar eclipse fall across the Ascendant/Descendant axis; it conjuncted his 10th lord Pluto and squared his 6th lord Moon. Third, there was another solar eclipse on his Sun in the 6th house. And finally, he had another lunar eclipse fall across the 1st house/7th house axis while conjuncting his Ascendant lord Uranus and his lunar nodes. It would be easy to assume that this series of eclipses was indicating marital or interpersonal relationship changes in Obama’s life, but they are also suggesting career change due to the 7th house’s dual role as marriage indicator and professional attainment indicator.

In September 1946, Julia McWilliams married Paul Child, becoming Julia Child (born Aug. 15, 1912 at 11:30 pm PST in Pasadena, CA) at the advanced age (by 1940s standards) of 34. Within the year preceding that date, she had both a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse highlighting her Ascendant, 7th house and 4th house.

On May 9, 2005, Kenny Chesney (born Mar. 26, 1968 at 3:55 pm EST in Knoxville, TN) and Renee Zellweger (born Apr. 25, 1969 at 2:41 pm CST in Baytown, TX) got married after a whirlwind courtship of less than four months. During the year preceding this event, both of their charts showed solar eclipse and lunar eclipse activity surrounding key natal houses (the 4th and 7th houses in Chesney’s chart were being touched off, while the more ominous 6th and 12th houses were being touched in addition to the 5th house in Zellweger’s chart).

On November 25, 1981, George W. and Laura Bush (born Nov. 4, 1946 at 6:00 pm CST in Midland, TX) finally achieved their dream of becoming parents when twin daughters were born to them after almost four years of trying to conceive. Laura’s chart showed solar and lunar eclipse activity surrounding 4th, 5th, and 10th house factors.

Finally, Tiger Woods (born Dec. 30, 1975 at 10:50 pm PST in Long Beach, CA), Arnold Schwarzenegger (born Jul. 30, 1947 at 4:10 am [+1:00 GMT] in Graz, Austria), and Prince Charles of Wales (born Nov. 14, 1948 at 9:14 pm GMT in London, England) all experienced scandalous marriage breakups after appropriately descriptive solar and lunar eclipses hit certain planets and points in their natal charts. See the eclipse of late December 2009 for Tiger Woods, eclipses of early 2011 for Arnold Schwarzenegger, and eclipses of 1992 for Prince Charles.

would you know the meaning of a new moon eclipse in scorpio exactly squaring the cusps of natal house 2 and natal house 8? thank you…

      Hi Ed,

Thanks for visiting my blog, and for your question. To understand what the eclipse is indicating for your life, you need to consider which natal house axis the eclipse Sun and Moon falls into. In particular, you want to pay attention to the house that the eclipse Moon occupies, as this is the area of life that is being “lit up,” so to speak. For example, if the eclipse Sun is in the natal 11th house and the eclipse Moon is in the natal 5th house squaring your 2nd house and 8th house cusps, one possible interpretation is that some notable event relating to a child creates financial pressure, emotional distress, or both. I hope this helps.
